April 23, 2010

Seeking the first win for the starting pitching staff, Jason toed the rubber for the Yanks as he took on the Syracuse SkyChiefs. He struggled in the first, giving up a 3-run homerun, but settled down and threw 3 scoreless innings before giving up a run in the 5th and 6th innings. The Yanks lost by a final score of 8-1. Jason's final line was 6 innings, 6 hits, 5 runs, 6 strikeouts and 2 walks. His next start will come agains the Louisville Bats at home in Scranton on the 27th.

On a chilly Saturday night with the temperature in the low 30s, Jason made his second consecutive start of the season against the Bisons. It was a definite pitcher's duel as both starters went 7 strong innings. Jason, however, was the only one to allow runs. In his 7 innings of work he gave up 2 runs on 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 4. Although he has pitched well in his two starts he's received 0 runs of support for his efforts. His next start will come April 22nd against the Syracuse SkyChiefs in Syracuse.

In his first start of the season last week against the Buffalo Bisons, Jason made one mistake pitch and surrendered a 3-run homerun in the first inning. He finished the night going 4.2 innings giving up 3 runs on 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 2. After being rained out last night against Syracuse, he will face the Bisons again tonight as he looks for redemption from his first start.

Jason made his third appearence this spring yesterday, March 8th, against the Pirates in Bradenton, Florida. He pitched a scoreless 9th inning, inducing 2 flyouts and a groundout. In his three appearences this spring he has given up 0 runs and 0 hits while striking out 3.

Major League spring training is in full swing and the Yankees won picked up where they left off last season. Facing the Pirates in their first game of spring training, the Yankees won it in walk-off fashion as Collin Curtis hit a 3-run homerun in the bottom of the 9th to give the Yankees a 6-3 win over the Pirates. Jason threw 2/3 inning in relief in the 8th inning and struck out both batters he faced.

After throwing only 9 pitches in the first inning, Jason was pulled from the game with a foot injury. An MRI revealed that he has plantar fasciitis, an inflammatory condition of the foot. He played catch yesterday with no pain and will soon throw a bullpen session. Meanwhile, the Yanks advanced to the playoffs with an 81-60 overall record and are up 2-0 in their best of 5 playoff series against the Gwinnet Braves. They need one more win to advance to the finals where they would face either Durham or Louisville. The Yanks will send Kei Igawa to the mound tonight to try and stamp their ticket to the finals, where they look to defend their championship from last year. If ready, Jason might be available to pitch in the finals.

After nearly a month off from the Redbirds, Matt returned to action last Sunday as the Redbirds took on the East LA Dodgers at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. He went 1 for 1 with a 2-run home run and 2 walks. The Redbirds won the game by a final score of 4-1.

After being rained out of his start on the 29th of August, Jason took the mound for the S/WB Yanks in the second game of a double header agains the Pawtucket Red Sox. He tossed 5.1 scoreless innings giving up only 2 hits while walking 2 and striking out 5. In 5 starts for the Yankees since being traded, Jason is 4-0 with a 1.37 ERA. The Scranton/WB Yanks have clinched a playoff spot in the International League with a 4.5 game lead over Syracuse. The regular season ends September 7th and playoffs will begin soon after.

After a one our and four minute rain delay, the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees started their game against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Jason got the nod, after not pitching for 10 days. He was limited in his pitch count and lasted 4 innings giving up 2 runs on 4 hits with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts. He made his exit after only 86 pitches. He did not receive the win as the Scranton/WB Yanks defeated the IronPigs 10-5. His next start should come against the Buffalo Bisons at home.

After the Yankees signed the recently released Russ Ortiz, he was put in the rotation and pushed Jason's second start back by another day. Pitching on 7 days rest, Jason didn't skip a beat. Taking on the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the new Triple-A affiliate of the Phillies, he went 6 innings giving up 1 run on 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 2. He showed excellent command, throwing 51 of his 76 pitches for strikes. In his two starts with the Yanks he is 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA with 9 strikeouts and 2 walks. His next start should be August 14th on the road against the Durham Bulls.

Back at Brookside Park in Pasadena, the Redbirds put a shellacking on the Norwalk Dodgers, beating them 20-1 in a time-shortened 8 inning game. Matt went 1 for 3 with a single, 3 walks, and 3 runs scored.

With the Colorado Rockies in his rear view mirror, Jason was looking ahead to his first start with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. His first start came at home last Saturday, August 1st, at PNC Field in Scranton, PA. Squaring off against the Pawtucket Redsox (aka PawSox) in Game 2 of a 7-inning double-header, Jason tossed 5 shutout innings and held the PawSox to 5 hits. He walked none and struck out 7 en route to his first victory in the International League as the Yankees beat the Sox 4-0.

After being off for a week from the Redbirds, Matt was back in action as the Redbirds participated in the Stan Musial World Series Tournament that took place at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, CA. The Redbirds were bidding for a spot in the World Series Tournament to be held in Huntsville, Texas. The tournament was formatted for a 6 team double-elimination tournament. Kicking off the first game Friday morning, the Redbirds took on Fontinetti's. In what turned out to be a back and forth battle between both teams, the Redbirds emerged victorious by winning 4-3. Matt went 1 for 3 in the game with two singles and a walk. In their second game, the Redbirds squared off against the East LA Dodgers. They took the lead early and never looked back, winning the game in 7 innings by a score of 8-1. Matt went 2 for 4 in that game with a single and home run. With two wins behind them, the Redbirds were in the driver's seat for their third game against the hosting team, the Orange County Mariners. It was battle of the undefeated teams, both 2-0 from the day before. In another back and forth battle, the Redbirds couldn't overcome defensive errors and lost 8-5. In the loss to the Mariners, Matt went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and a single. Needing to win 3 games in order to advance to Texas, the Birds had a huge task in front of them. They took on the Knicks in an elimination game Sunday morning at 10am facing the threat of going home early. In great pitching efforts from both sides, the game was scoreless until the 6th inning when the Redbirds took a 1-0 lead. The Knicks bounced back in the bottom half of the inning plating one run to tie it at 1. Heading into the top of the 9th inning with a 2-1 lead over the Knicks, the Redbirds defense fell apart, committing 3 errors and allowing 3 runs to score. They weren't able to overcome the errors as they lost 5-2 and were eliminated from the tournament. Matt finished the final game 2 for 4 with a single and double. The Redbirds are back in action at home Sunday morning at Brookside Park in Pasadena to take on the Norwalk Dodgers.

In an effort to add depth to their pitching, the New York Yankees have acquired Jason from the Rockies in exchange for a player to be named later. The Sky Sox were in Fresno when Jason received word that he had been traded. He will report to the Yanks Triple-A affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. To read more about the trade click HERE.

After hitting his first home run, Matt struggled in the following games against the Toros going 0 for 12. His struggles sparked a few moves by the Long Beach Armada including signing two new outfielders. With the signing of the two outfielders Matt was released from the Armada last Tuesday, July 20th. In 24 at-bats, Matt had 3 hits, 2 walks, and 13 strikeouts. The Armada signed rookie outfielder Asif Shah out of the Arizona Summer League and Armada alum from last year Steve Moss. With the signing of Moss, outfielder Casey Garrison was also released.

Only 3 games into his career as and outfielder, Matt hit his first home run. He went 2 for 4 Sunday night against the Tucson Toros with a single, home run, and 2 strikeouts. The Armada were swept in their 3 game series against the Toros to open the second half of the season. They will have 3 days off for the All-Star break and then face off against the Toros again in a 4 game series starting Thursday night at Blair Field in Long Beach. The Armada are on their longest home stand of the season, which will last until the 30th of July before heading up north to Chico.

Jason did not make his scheduled start tonight and will enjoy a 4 day break for the Triple-A All-Star game.

Matt got his first professional start in the outfield last night against the Tucson Toros. He started in right field and hit 6th in the lineup. In his first at-bat he singled to right field for his first professional hit. He also line out to deep center field, reached base on a dropped 3rd strike, and grounded out. He finished the night 1 for 4 with 2 runs scored. The Armada were losing 5-4 going into the top of the 8th inning when the Toros exploded for 3 runs to take a 8-4 lead. Long Beach wasn't able to muster up the runs they needed and dropped the contest 8-4. Last night was the first game of the second half of the season as the Armada fall to 0-1. The All-Star game is coming up Tuesday, July 14th, in St. George. Long Beach will play at home until July 30th with a few days off mixed in between. They play the second game of the series tonight at 7:05pm and finish the series Sunday evening with a 6:05pm start time. There is also a new page for Matt's statistics. Jason will make his next start Sunday, July 12th, against the Salt Lake City Bees on the road in Salt Lake City. It will be their final game before the Triple-A All-Star Game, which is Scheduled for Tuesday night. They will enjoy a 4 day break and return to action July 16th at home against the Fresno Grizzlies.

Jason's struggles continued Tuesday night as he lasted only 2.2 innings giving up 7 runs on 6 hits while walking 4 and striking out 1. He took the loss as the Sky Sox lost 7-3 against the Portland Beavers. His next start will come after the All-Star break either at home against Fresno or on the road in Las Vegas.

In another close game at Brookside park Sunday morning the Redbirds fell short of victory losing to the East LA Dodgers 4-3. Matt went 0 for 3 with a strikeout. However, good news has traveled Matt's way as he was just signed by the Long Beach Armada and will suit up for the game tonight against the Chico Outlaws. Right fielder J.J. Sherill injured was injured in the game last night and Matt will be filling the extra roster spot available. The Armada play their home games at Blair Field in Long Beach. After a quality start on the 26th of June, where Jason threw 6.2 innings of shutout baseball, he struggled again against the Salt Lake City Bees giving up 6 runs (5 Earned) on 10 hits in 5 innings of work while striking out 1 and walking 2. He took the loss as the Sky Sox fell to the Bees 7-6. With that loss, Jason falls to 5-5 on the season with a 6.22 ERA. His next start will be against the Portland Beavers on July 6th on the road.

Matt had a good day at the plate for the Redbirds this past Sunday as they had a double-header at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. In the first game against the Glendale Gauchos he went 1 for 3 with a sacrifice fly, home run, 3 RBIs and one run scored. In the bottom of the 9th inning the Redbirds were down 4-1 when Matt came to the dish and hit a 2-run homerun to bring the birds within 1 run. Their efforts fell short as they lost the game 4-3. In the afternoon game against the Giants, Matt went 2 for 5 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored, and a strikeout. Again, the Redbirds struggled and their pitching fell apart as the Giants went on to win the game 10-4. They will be back in action Sunday, July 5th, at 10am at Brookside Park. Through 36 games with the Redbirds, Matt is hitting .316 with 10 HR, (8) 2B, 29 RBI, and 28 BBs. He also has 6 stolen bases and one hit-by-pitch.

It was another rought outing for Jason Monday night against the Salt Lake City Bees. He went 5 innings giving up 7 runs on 9 hits, which included a grand slam. He also walked two and struck out two as he was tagged with his 4th loss of the season. The Sky Sox are on a 13-game road trip that will take them to Salt Lake City, Fresno, and Sacramento before returning home to Colorado Springs. Jason will make his next start in Fresno against the Grizzlies on Saturday, June 20th.

Matt is still looking for a team. He has a workout with the St. George Roadrunners of the Golden League on Friday and has caught the interest of the Evansville Otters of the Frontier League.

After a shaky start on June 4th against the Fresno Grizzlies where he gave up 5 runs in 4 innings, Jason came back against the Sacramento River Cats to toss 6 strong innings giving up only 2 runs on 6 hits while walking 3 and striking out 3. He earned his 4th win of the season as the Sky Sox held on to win the game 4-3. Jason is back in action tonight against the Salt Lake City Bees. Jason's control has come back to him this year as he has walked only 21 batters in 68 total innings thrown. Last year, he threw 99.1 total innings and walked 52 batters.

Matt and the Redbirds were back in action Sunday morning as they played a 12 inning game. Matt had a solid day at the dish, going 3 for 6 with 2 singles and a home run, which capped off a 6 RBI day for him. The Redbirds destroyed the Cardinals by a score of 22-2. The Redbirds burst out in the first two innings for 14 runs and didn't look back as they continued to stock pile runs. He is still looking for a team to play with this summer.

Jason and the Sky Sox took on the Tacoma Rainiers Saturday night at home in Colorado Springs. En route to his 3rd loss of the season, Jason gave up 6 runs on 6 hits in 5+ innings of work. He also walked two and struck out one. The Sky Sox made a comeback after Jason came out of the game, scoring 4 runs. However, their efforts were futile as the Rainiers held on to win 6-5. His next start will come on Thursday as the Sox take on the Fresno Grizzlies at home with a 7:05pm scheduled start time.

Matt and the Redbirds split a double header Sunday afternoon. After losing 3-2 to the Baracudas in the morning they came back to beat the Blue Jays 9-4. In his first at-bat since spring training, Matt launched a home run over the 385 left field fence at Brookside Park in Pasadena, giving the Redbirds an early 1-0 lead. Their lead was squandered after two key errors helped the Baracudas take a 3-2 lead. The Redbirds had a chance to go ahead with runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs in the 9th inning but were caught striking out looking to end the game. Matt finished the first game 1 for 3 with a home run, walk, and 1 RBI. The Redbird bats came alive in the second game as they came out swinging and scored 5 runs in the first inning. Matt finished the second game 2 for 5 with a single, double, and 1 RBI.

Today was another round of cuts for the Armada. Although it was only pitchers today, there are still more cuts to be made. The final roster will be set on Tuesday as the Armada leave for their first road trip to Canada on Wednesday. They will open in Calgary and then travel to Edmonton to take on the Cracker Cats. The Armada will then drive to Victoria to take on the newly added Victoria Seals and then fly down to Yuma before heading home. The Armada home opener will be June 9th at Blair Field in Long Beach.

Matt went 1 for 3 today with a triple and 2 runs scored in today's spring training game.

May 15, 2009

It has been a good few days of camp for Matt as he made the first round of cuts for the Armada. He went 2 for 3 Wednesday afternoon with a single, double, walk, RBI, and run scored. Today he went 1 for 5 with a walk, single, 3 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. He is currently batting .368 during spring training for the Armada, who will make another round of cuts tomorrow. Jason did not fair so well in his last start against the Iowa Cubs at home on Wednesday afternoon. He went 4.1 innings giving up 8 runs on 11 hits while walking 2 and striking out 3. He will look to bounce back from his rough start when he takes on the Omaha Royals at home Monday night starting at 6:05pm.

Matt had a great day at the plate yesterday going 3 for 4 with a single, double, and homerun during the Armada intersquad. Today he went 0 for 3 with 2 Ks and a line out to center field. His spring training stats are posted on the stats page. Manager Gary Templeton will be making cuts starting Thursday. There are currently about 50 players in camp competing for 22 spots on the roster.

Jason will be throwing tomorrow with a scheduled start time of 11:05am against the Iowa Cubs.

Jason is back to his old self again with the Sky Sox this season as his last two outings have clearly shown. On May 1st, he went 6 innings giving up 2 runs on 7 hits while striking out 2 and walking 2. On May 8th he turned in another quality start, going 6.1 strong innings giving up only 2 runs on 8 hits while striking out 6 and walking 2. He earned a no-decision in both games. His next start is scheduled for an 11am on May 13th, at home against the Iowa Cubs. He will look to continue his dominant streak and hopefully earn a promotion to the big leagues.

Matt had his final double header with the Redbirds last Sunday, May 3rd. He went 2 for 4 in the first game with a homerun and single and 0 for 1 in the second game with 2 walks. He finished with the Redbirds hitting .315 with 7 HRs, 5 doubles, 1 triple, and 18 RBIs in 29 games. Spring training began today for the Long Beach Armada of the Golden League. Matt went 1 for 4 in the game today with a single and 2 strikeouts. Spring training ends for the Armada on the 19th and they start their season in Canada on May 21st.
